# The Difference Between Member Search and Contact Search

## There is a difference between where you search for members and where you search for contacts in your Engage portal.

**Member Search**

To search for members registered in your database, navigate to \*\*Search\*\* in the toolbar and select \*\*Members\*\*.

In the search window, enter the member’s email address or phone number. To search using additional criteria, click \*\*Advanced\*\*.

Click \*\*Search\*\* to display the member's results. To view full details, click the member's ID.

**Contact Search**

To search for both members and contacts at once, use the global search icon in the toolbar.

Click the magnifying glass (🔍) icon located in the top-right corner of the toolbar.

A search window will then appear where you can enter either the first name or the last name. The person may not always appear when entering the full name, so try using only the first name first, and then only the last name if you cannot find the person you are looking for.

This function is useful if you are not entirely sure what you are actually looking for. For example, you might be searching for a member with the first name Helene. If you search for Helene, you will see results that include both members and contacts named Helene, as well as those who have Helene as a middle name.

By clicking on the contact you are looking for, you will be able to view information about their membership profile.
